About Tuscola High School
Tuscola High School is a public senior high school located in Waynesville, NC, affectionately referred to as “The Hill” due to our commanding view of the Smoky and Balsam Mountain ranges. The school is located off Highway 19-23, just twenty miles southwest of Asheville, North Carolina, where it sits amid the beautiful Smoky Mountains. Tuscola High School succeeded the original Waynesville Township High School during the 1966 consolidation that merged Fines Creek and Crabtree High Schools with Waynesville, NC. Formerly a high school of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, freshmen became a part of the student body in 1993. The school was built in the Tuscola community of East Waynesville, near Lake Junaluska, and was named after the community in which it was built. Tuscola is a Cherokee word that means “Digging in Many Places”. Appropriately, the school mascot is the Mountaineers, frequently abbreviated as the Mounties; the school colors are black and gold.
Students at Tuscola have numerous opportunities for extracurricular activities. Sports offered are football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, tennis. swimming, softball, track, golf, soccer, cross-country, and cheerleading.
