Two Tuscola students virtually presented science projects during the Region 8 Western Regional Science
Fair. The virtual fair for junior and high school students was held on Tuesday, February 15. Both students
were recognized for the quality of their projects.
Taryn Estes’ project, the effectiveness of hand sanitizers, examined the usefulness of different brands of
common hand sanitizers. She was able to determine how successful various hand sanitizers were at
deterring bacteria growth over a twenty-day period. Taryn reported that “researching this topic during a
pandemic was interesting and informative”. Taryn’s project won third place in Senior Division Biological
Science B.
Addie Melton’s project, how chemicals affect plant growth, studied how exposing a plant to chemicals (such
as miracle grow or a pesticide) change plant growth. Her project was documented with pictures following
the change plants underwent due to chemical exposure. Addie’s project was awarded first place in Senior
Division Chemistry. Addie’s 1st place finish makes her project eligible to participate in the 2022 North
Carolina Science and Engineering Fair.
Taryn and Addie prepared their projects during fall semester while they were members of an honors
chemistry I class taught by Jim Davis. Their projects competed in Tuscola’s Fall 2022 science fair. Both
students were awarded projects of merit recognition which allowed them to compete in this week’s Region
8 fair.
